A YOUTHFUL Newton Abbot RFC 1st XV pulled off a minor surprise in Western Counties West by defeating promotion-chasers Paignton 45-31.
Paignton, long-time tenants of second spot in Western Counties West, went into the Rackerhayes showdown as favourites against the relegation-worrying All Whites.
Newton, who had four current colts in their starting line-up and a fifth on the bench, clearly hadn’t swotted-up on the script. They were never behind in the match and pulled away from 19-14 up at the break in the second half.
George Greenwood, one of the colts in the side, inspired Newton with a try under the posts after the interval that had the Clubhouse Corner crowd roaring.
Although Paignton had their moments in the second half – Happy Makate’s long-range, interception try the highlight – they were distinctly second best for much of it.

Newton Abbot’s try scorers were Jed Griffin (2), Greenwood (2), Ben Rockey and Jake Monnington. Jacob Forey (3) and Lawrence White (2) kicked the goals.
Paignton’s try scorers were Makate (2), Jordan Hodge and Dewald Stoop. Brad McKee kicked the goals.
Victory pushed Newton Abbot seven points clear of third-from-bottom Plymstock Oaks with three games left to stay there.
Defeat sounded the death knell for Paignton’s hopes of catching leaders Wiveliscombe for the one promotion place out of the division. A nine-point deficit with 15 to play for looks too many to make up now.
Newton Abbot Spartans were beaten 46-12 away at North Tawton whilst New Cross had no game at the weekend.
