NEWTON Abbot Tennis Club played two matches last week and recorded wins in both.

A mixed team travelled to Kingsbridge for a South Devon League match and notched up a 7-1 victory which captain Kate Hooper said could easily have been 8-0.

She commented: ‘Dave [Walker] and I were 5-2 up in our final set but let that lead slip and then lost the tie-break. Nevertheless it was a great win against a more than competent Kingsbridge four.’

Before that Hooper and Walker had won their first rubber 6-2, 7-6 and the first of their second 6-3. The other pairing of Nell Clotworthy and Mark Ayliffe had a clean sweep only dropping six games in winning four sets.

The Ladies’ B team staged a remarkable comeback against visiting Bovey Tracey in Division Five of the Exeter & District League.

The Newton quartet were 4-1 adrift after the first rubbers but then each pair won their second rubbers 2-nil to emerge the 5-4 winners.

Jane Comyns and Lee Denmead lost their opener 6-7, 4-6 but Ali Ainscough and Julie Doxsey picked up a point thanks to a 3-6, 6-4 scoreline with Bovey winning the tie-break.

The second half went much better for Newton.with Ainscough and Doxsey winning 6-1, 6-1 and Comyms and Denmead winning a tighter contest 6-4, 6-4.
