In a relatively quiet week for Newton Abbot Tennis Club, only three teams took to the courts.

On Tuesday evening, the unbeaten Men’s B team travelled to play Exeter-based Tunnels in Division Eight of the Exeter & District League. They returned home with their record intact thanks to a 6-2 win.

Captain Dave Doxsey partnered Andrew Strang to a four-point haul, winning their first rubber 6-1, 6-2 before going on to complete a 6-1, 6-0 win in the second.

It was a split evening for Mark Laughton and Anthony Carter who opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win, but lost their second match 6-2, 6-2 against the home club’s stronger pairing.

In spite of being unbeaten six from six, Newton are only in second place as leaders Exwick B are three points ahead with five wins from seven starts.

Newton Ladies’ B team welcomed David Lloyd C to The Rec on Wednesday evening for an Exeter & District Division Five match.

The home side won a tightly fought contest 5-4, to remain unbeaten with three wins and a couple of draws.

Katherine Neale and captain Jane Comyns drew their first match 5-7, 7-6 but lost the tie break, then won their second rubber 7-6, 6-2; Ellie Mathieson and Tracey Milton won their first rubber with a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline but went on to lose their second 6-2, 6-1.

The Men’s team in the South Devon Summer League travelled to Torquay where they ended up the 5-3 losers.

James Brice and Mark Ainscough had a very close opener with both sets going to a tie break and the rubber being shared 7-6, 6-7; however they then lost both sets in the second rubber.

Rob Owen and Andy Lloyd lost their first rubber, but then won both sets in their second.

The Men’s A team should have been in action, but Tiverton were unable to raise a team to travel. As a consequence Newton were awarded an 8-nil win.
