Four Maverick Runners tackled the Exeter Half Marathon, on Saturday, with three finishing with new personal best times.

Organised by and in aid of Exeter City Football in the Community, the half is billed as a fast race, with the flat course offering good potential for runners to achieve a new personal best time.

However, due to being a three-lap race, it requires a certain amount of mental toughness for the competitors to keep the pace up as there is no real variety to the terrain or any change in elevation. The weather also added to the mix, with a brisk cross wind and various puddles to negotiate on the course.

Maverick Runners Dominic Spayne (36th in 1.28.37) and Matt Steele (40th in 1.29.55) both dipped inside the 1.30 barrier without too much difficulty. They are both training for the Paris Marathon, which takes place at the beginning of April.

A new Maverick recruit went one better in his debut race for the club – Martyn Ellis showing his potential by setting a new personal best time of 1.24.22 in finishing 18th.

Daryl Milford led the Mavericks home in a time of 1.22.47 for 12th place.
