The photograph is believed to be taken in 1896, when a local branch of the Salvation Army was created in Teignmouth.

The band paraded through town followed by a meeting held in the Wesleyan schoolroom, now the Methodist Church Hall, in Somerset Place.

Meetings were so well attended they spilled out on to the street.
