A CAR was torched on a remote country road on the outskirts of Ashburton early today.

A fire crew from the town dealt with the suspected arson attack on the abandoned car near Woodland just after 2am.

The car was well alight when they reached the scene on the road from Purcombe Cross to Lake Cross.

A hosereel jet was used to knock out the flames.

A fire spokesman said the vehicle was severely damaged.

Police were told by fire chiefs that the car appeared to have been set alight deliberately.
