FIREFIGHTERS rescued a dog in Newton Abbot on Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out at a house in Wain Lane.

Two engines from the town and one from Torquay were called to the property just before 4pm.

The fire involved an electric cooker in the kitchen.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Twenty per cent of the kitchen was damaged by heat and smoke, and 10 per cent of the remainder of the property was damaged by smoke.’

The crews used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and a safety jet to deal with the incident.

‘One dog was also recused by Fire Service personnel,’ the spokesman added.
