A tractor and towed cropper machine were destroyed after accidentally catching fire in a field north of Moretonhampstead over the weekend.

Two teams of firefighters rushed to a farm at Howton after the farmer reported his vehicle ablaze.

The alarm was raised just a minute before midnight on Saturday.

Crews from Moretonhampstead and Chagford arrived to find the vehicles well alight.

A hosereel jet was used to extinguish the flames which were subdued about an hour after the emergency call was made.

A fire spokesman said the tractor was ‘completely destroyed.’
