A judge has ordered a special fact-finding hearing to determine whether a rapist used a knife during an attack on a woman in Honiton.

Scott Wilson pleaded guilty to two counts of rape when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court by video link from Exeter Prison.

He also admitted carrying a knife during the attack in March 2016 but entered a basis of plea in which he said he did not use it to make threats during the incident.

Wilson, aged 25, of Honeymead Road, Kingsteignton, admitted two counts of raping the same victim on the same day. He also admitted possession of a knife and personal possession of amphetamine and cannabis. He denied making threats to kill.

Mr Nigel Wraith, prosecuting, said the plea to that count was acceptable, but the basis of plea for the other counts was not.

Recorder Mr Philip Mott, QC, said the issue of the knife could make a significant difference to the eventual sentence and it is necessary to conduct a special fact-finding procedure known as a Newton Hearing to settle it.

He adjourned the case until January 13, when Wilson will once again appear by video link. He remanded him in custody.
