A BANNED driver caused ‘carnage’ when he crashed into an oncoming car in Newton Abbot after racing at nearly 100mph.

Kieran McColl, 22, had two young female passengers in his Vauxhall Corsa car who were ‘extremely frightened’ of his fast driving and told him to slow down.

But today Exeter Crown Court heard he turned up the volume on his radio and accelerated along the 60mph rural road.

He came across a learner driver going slowly in front of him in St Marychurch Road, Newton Abbot, one evening in October 2024 and overtook but crashed into an oncoming car.

Both cars overturned and left the other car driver - a 60 year old care worker - needing hospital treatment.

The court heard McColl, of Hele Road, Torquay, blamed another person as the driver, a position he maintained for some time.

But McColl admitted dangerous driving and driving while disqualified and was jailed for 15 months, suspended for two years.

He had been banned for a year for drug driving just four months before the crash.

His barrister Nikki Coombe told the court he stupidly caved into pressure from one of his passengers to drive after he had said he was a banned driver.

Miss Coombe said: ‘He was speeding. It was a really stupid decision, bad driving with appalling consequences. It was totally stupid and reckless.’

Judge Stephen Climie also imposed a four year driving ban on McColl and ordered him to pay the injured driver £2,500 compensation.
