A RARE opportunity has arisen to become a Newton Abbot-based firefighter.
Retained crews at the station are looking for two new recruits to join them at their base in The Avenue.
But there is a catch. Hopefuls have to live or work within five minutes of the station to qualify for the post.
The ‘on-call’ candidates should, their Devon and Somerset brigade employers insist, have ‘a commitment to the community, a positive attitude and a good level of fitness.’
No previous firefighting experience is required.
A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said: ‘This is an opportunity for men and women who live and/or work within a five-minutes response time to the station to potentially save lives in fire, flood and road traffic emergencies.’
He added: ‘Being on-call means they can provide a level of cover whilst at work or at home and, when needed, their pager will alert them to attend the station.
‘People who can give cover during the day are particularly needed. Many people have primary occupations whilst on-call – either employed or self-employed.’
Serving on-call firefighters have a range of occupations in local factories, shops, takeaways and restaurants.
Those interested in applying need to be aged over 18 and have a good level of fitness and strength.
‘But sometimes people overestimate the levels required and this can deter them from applying, particularly women,’ the spokesman revealed.
The service says it will give people advice and help in preparing for both the written and practical assessments.
‘Equally, living with a disability is not automatically a barrier to operational firefighting. It depends on the nature of the disability. Once you are recruited full training is provided,’ the spokesman said.
He added: ‘We are an inclusive employer, working towards a workforce which reflects the local community. If anyone is interested they can visit our recruitment pages at dsfire.gov.uk or Newton Abbot Facebook page.’
