An 80-year-old man has been warned he will receive a long jail sentence after he admitted the historic abuse of two young girls.

Michael Davie, of Beechwood Road, Chudleigh, committed serious sexual offences against one girl in the late 1990s and early 2000s and against the other between 2006 to 2008.

At least one of the offences would be charged as rape if it were committed under current legislation.

Davie pleaded guilty to a total of seven offences when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court, where he was remanded in custody by Judge Timothy Rose.

He told him: ‘You are facing a very substantial custodial sentence. I see no point in asking the probation service to provide a report in this case.’

Davie admitted five offences in relation to the first victim. The were sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, two counts of attempted buggery, and two other serious sexual offences.

The first count, which is the equivalent to a statutory rape under current laws, was carried out when the girl was aged 11 to 12. Some of the others relate to when she was 14 or 15.

He admitted two counts of sexual assault on a child under 13 in relation to the second victim, who was aged 10 to 11 at the time.

Davie denied two counts of having sexual intercourse with the first girl when she was aged seven to 10.

Miss Bathsheba Cassel, prosecuting, said it is likely that his pleas will be accepted and the case can move forward to sentence.

Mr Richard Crabb, defending, said he will be in a position to mitigate at the next hearing.
