An inmate at Channings Wood prison has admitted having drugs, phones and 15 SIM cards in his cell.

Darren Gleave, aged 40, was also found with a dart during a search at the prison at Denbury, near Newton Abbot, in April last year.

Gleave admitted possession of a pointed object, two counts of possessing the psychoactive drug Spice, and three of possessing mobile phones or their components when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

He was found with four mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, three USB chargers and two sets of headphones at Channings Wood.

He entered a basis of plea which said he had been coerced by other prisoners and later suffered a punctured lung in an attack. Judge Peter Johnson adjourned sentence until next week, when Gleave will appear once more by video link.

Mr Jeffrey Segan, defending, said Gleave has almost two years of his existing sentence to serve.
