A prisoner urinated in his police cell – and then did the same thing as he was being transferred in a police van.

Jim Smith, from Newton Abbot, admitted causing criminal damaged to the police cell in Torquay, Devon, and in the cell in the police van on the 25-mile trip to Exeter one day last month.

Prosecutor Lyndsey Baker said 42-year-old Smith had a pee and rubbed his handcuffs against the cell wall causing £200 damage and clean-up costs.

He then urinated in the van and kicked the cell doors in the vehicle causing £100 damage and clean-up bill.

Smith, of Sandringham Road, Newton Abbot, Devon, said: ‘I am sorry for what I have done. I am ashamed of p***ing in the cells. I put my hands up. My head was in bad place.’

Exeter magistrates fined him a total of £320 with costs and compensation.

Smith, who is on benefits, said he was trying to sort out his life and told the bench: ‘I don’t want to see you again.’

The chairwoman replied: ‘A lot of people say that to me. It is not very nice to clean up not just once but twice.’
