FIREFIGHTERS and police were called out to deal with a public shelter on fire in Starcross yesterday evening (Saturday, March 21).

A fire crew from Dawlish attended the incident in the stand alone shelter which had its hatched roof on fire just after 7.15pm.

On arrival crews confirmed the shelter was well alight and requested a further pump to assist which was duly dispatched from Middlemoor station in Exeter.

Crews stripped the thatched roof and used a single hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. Police also attended the incident as the fire is believed to have been started deliberately.
