Fire appliances from Newton Abbot and Teignmouth responded to reports of a car fire on the A380 this afternoon (Sunday).

Crews were mobilised to the incident on the north-bound carriageway between Mamhead and Great Haldon just after 3pm.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘On arriving at the scene crews found one private motor vehicle on the road with smoke and flames were issuing from the engine bay and spreading into the passenger compartment.

‘Fortunately the occupants had removed themselves from the vehicle prior to our arrival.’

Two breathing apparatus users and one hose reel jet were used to extinguish the blaze.

The vehicle was severely damage and the cause of the fire was accidental.
