A PEDESTRIAN has been killed in a freak accident.

The man was walking his dog along a footpath adjacent to the A38 near Drumbridges roundabout this morning when he was struck by a tyre. The man, who was local and in his 70s, died shortly afterwards. His next of kin have been informed.

The vehicle has been traced and enquiries are being made with the driver.

The dog was recovered.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to the A38 between the Drumbridges roundabout and Chudleigh Knighton junction near Newton Abbot, today following a report that around 10.30am a pedestrian had been struck by a tyre which appeared to have come off a passing vehicle.

The Westbound carriageway was temporarily closed for a short period and the Eastbound / Exeter-bound carriageway remained closed for several hours with detours set in place.

The police spokesman said: ‘Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information which could assist police enquiries is asked to contact police on 101 or via email at [email protected] quoting log number 261, 1/9/20.’
