Dawlish Town Council has hatched a cracking idea for Easter – and it's healthier than the traditional chocolate egg.

The authority is encouraging as many people as possible to sign up to its new waterfowl adoption scheme.

Just £5 will sponsor a duckling or cygnet for a year and, for those with between £10 and £20 to spare, the town's famous black swans are also up for grabs.

All those taking part will receive a photo of their adopted baby bird, an official certificate and children's activity pack containing puzzles and colouring pages.

Adopters' names will also be displayed at the waterfowl compound.

The idea was the brainchild of admin assistant Tracey Ward.

Clerk John Winchester said: 'It's innovative because we used to have a wishing well and when that was new we collected quite a lot of money.

'But when the novelty wore off the income went down.

'We're hoping people will like this idea which will help with the cost of caring for our waterfowl, the bill for which each year is in the region of £6,000 plus staff costs.

'If you would like details please call Tracey who will arrange for your certificate to be posted in time for Easter if you call before April 8.'
