COMMERCIAL agents marketing Teignmouth’s Lido for sale say bids for the site have to be in by September.

Teignbridge Council has instructed Bettesworths Chartered Surveyors two market the freehold sale in the ‘landmark’ Lido site.

The agents describe it as ‘one of the South West’s most prominent coastal leisure assets’.

And they say: ‘The site is considered suitable for a variety of potential future uses, subject to planning, including leisure, hospitality, wellness, healthcare or possible redevelopment opportunities.’

Matt Bettesworth of Bettesworths commented:

‘The Lido represents an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a landmark coastal site in one of the South West’s most prominent seafront locations.

‘Opportunities of this nature very seldom come to the open market and we anticipate interest from a wide range of leisure, hospitality, healthcare and development operators, together with community-led proposals.

‘The site offers enormous potential, but ultimately value here will be driven by vision, deliverability and the quality of proposals received.

‘Occupying a prime beachfront position on Eastcliff Walk, the property comprises the well-known outdoor swimming pool together with associated buildings and extensive grounds extending to approximately 0.8 acres.’

The sale comes after Teignbridge Council agreed to close the Lido as part of cost-cutting measures.

The decision was reversed in March following a public outcry and, recognising the strength of local support, agreed to open it for this summer while it goes on the open market.

However, it is designated an Asset of Community Value (ACV), with a statutory moratorium period currently in place.

This provides community groups with the opportunity to prepare and submit proposals for the future of the site alongside private and commercial bids.

Bettesworths say the council has confirmed that all expressions of interest received will be considered and it is seeking to ensure all potential options for the Lido are ‘fully explored’ before any future decision is made.

The pool is being offered for sale by informal tender with bids invited by 12 noon on Friday 4th September 2026.
