Teignbridge-based charity Chernobyl Aid Devon needs the help of local organisations and businesses to help and support people who live in the Khoiniki district of Belarus, an area living in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. In the last three years, Chernobyl Aid Devon – formerly known as Thatch – has been sending lorryloads of aid to Khoiniki and in October it intends to provide boxes of everyday items for these families. It hopes that residents and organisations can buy items to put in these special boxes. The charity needs numerous items to make up these boxes including: toilet rolls, toilet cleaner, tablets of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, nail brushes, cotton wool, baby lotion, flannels, sponges, first aid plasters, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, hairbrushes and combs, rubber gloves, dish and floor clothes, scouring pads (not wire), disposable razors, tampons, baby wipes, washing powder and washing-up liquid. 'We really need to help out these families,' said Carol Lloyd, of Chernobyl Aid Devon. 'We want to give these people items that are necessities that we take for granted. 'Altogether we'd like to take out 30 boxes. People don't have to donate all these items, we'll take whatever people can give us, alternatively we welcome donations. 'All the boxes will be delivered by us and give to those who need it.' For further information on the Chernobyl Aid Devon Box collection call Carol or Tom on 01647 253017. The small charity is always looking for new members to help out. If you would like to find out more about Chernobyl Aid Devon call John Fisher on 01364 653867.
