NEWTON ABBOT All Whites hosted their sixth annual sportsman's evening.

Since its inception, in 2004, the event has grown year on year, with 400 guests from local businesses and rugby clubs enjoying an evening in the company of two former British and Irish Lions – Rob Howley and Ieuan Evans.

The former is due to head off to South Africa in a week's time as part of Ian McGeechan's coaching team.

Evans is known to many rugby fans for his scintillating threequarter play during a fine career both with Wales and the Lions.

The evening was sponsored by St Austell Breweries, and proceedings were expertly handled by the evening's comperes, John Jones, from Venture Inns, and Will Smith, of WBS UK Ltd.

Guests enjoyed a four-course meal and a host of fundraising entertainment which included horse racing and an auction of memorabilia.

To round off the night, guests were entertained by local comedian Tank Sherman.

The event is held annually at the end of the season in a marquee specially erected on the pitch at Rackerhayes.

Organisers Phil Burford and Russ Baker thanked the local business community and club sponsors for their patronage.

The guest at the 2010 event will be record breaking England and British and Irish Lions prop Jason Leonard.
