PLANNING permission has been granted to transform a former seafront hotel in Teignmouth into a professionally managed aparthotel.

Teignbridge Council has approved proposals to convert the Grade II listed Bay Hotel at 15 Powderham Terrace into serviced visitor accommodation, with work required to begin within three years.

The application, reference 26/00241/FUL, will see the historic building converted into a series of self-contained units aimed at tourists, business travellers and visitors looking for flexible accommodation.

Guest stays are expected to range from one night to several weeks, with the development operating as short-term visitor accommodation rather than permanent homes.

The aparthotel will be run by a professional management company, with bookings, guest communication and day-to-day operations coordinated through a centralised, off-site management system.

Teignmouth Town Council raised no objection to the proposals.

The planning documents say the scheme has been designed to make use of the existing historic structure while retaining and enhancing the building’s character and its contribution to the town’s Conservation Area.

The design and access statement describes the proposals as ‘sympathetic, minimal, and carefully considered’, with the internal layout adapted to accommodate the new use.

External changes are also planned to improve visual uniformity and symmetry while retaining key architectural features.

The former Bay Hotel is distinguished by its decorative stucco, large sash windows, cornices and carefully proportioned elevations, which contribute to Teignmouth’s historic seaside character.

The applicant says the development will revitalise a building currently in decline, while allowing it to continue providing high-quality visitor accommodation and maintaining its historic presence in the town.
