The 80 Tour of Britain riders who swept through Ashburton and Buckfastleigh on Saturday averaged more than 24mph on the penultimate 106-mile stage from Barnstaple to Dartmouth via Dartmoor.
The seventh stage honours were taken by Pablo Urtasun, of the Spanish team Euskaltel Euskadi, who completed the course in 4hrs 20mins 31secs.
Britain's Mark Cavendish, the defending world road race champion, finished 60th, but the next day won the final stage in Guildford.
Plymouth-born Jon Tiernan-Lock was the overall race winner, becoming the first British man to hold the title for 19 years.
