TEIGNBRIDGE Council is to take a lead role in obtaining European funding to develop Teignmouth's fish quay.
Council officers will work closely with the Teign Fishermen and Waterman's Association to get a £500,000 funding bid into the European Fisheries Fund by May 16.
Councillors welcomed the move at Teignbridge Council's executive committee on Tuesday, saying there was not a moment to lose.
'Time is of the essence. Pots of money allocated by other bodies tend not to sit around for long,' said Cllr James McMurray.
'We want to make sure we utilise the back beach area for increased leisure use.
'It will be important for our economy in the future.'
