FIREFIGHTERS tackled a bin fire which spread to the garage of a Newton Abbot home.

Numerous 999 calls were made when the fire broke out just before 1am on Sunday at the property in Twickenham Road.

Initial reports were that a fire on the driveway had spread to the garage.

When two crews from Newton Abbot arrived, the incident commander confirmed the fire involved a wheeled bin which had then spread to an adjacent single storey garage.

Two firefighters wore sets of breathing gear and used a hose reel jet and short extension ladder to fight the fire. It was extinguished half an hour later, leaving the outside of the garage slightly damaged.

A thermal imaging camera was used to check the fire had not spread further.
