The group promoting the future of Newton Abbot has said the town's historic livestock market should be central to its regeneration.
The call has been made by the Newton Abbot Community Interest Company (CIC), which has a vision for a regional agricultural centre incorporating a local produce market and 'field to plate' restaurant.
The organisation, which emerged from the drawing up of the 25-year community plan, says its aim is a future based on tradition, sustainability, enterprise and openness to change.
Doing away with the market and using the land for new homes and shops, a change proposed in the retail study published by Teignbridge Council earlier this month, is a step too far for the group.
