THERE is light at the end of the tunnel for frustrated Coach Road motorists, with the Wolborough Street closure expected to be lifted tomorrow (Friday, November 6).
However, drivers are not out of the woods yet, with two-way temporary traffic lights set to remain in place until November 25.
In a bid to ease the disruption, an urgent Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTPO) has been issued introducing a 6ft 6in width restriction on Coach Road.
The restriction prohibits vehicles exceeding the permitted width from using the road and has been sent to contractor carrying out the works so the necessary signage can be installed, making it enforceable.
The disruption has caused significant frustration among residents and motorists alike, with one Coach Road resident telling the Mid-Devon Advertiser that getting out of their driveway had become ‘impossible’.
They said: ‘My son went out to the Sainsbury’s Local to buy some food - it took him the best part of half an hour’.
A motorist, who lives in Abbotskerswell and regularly travels into Newton Abbot, said it took them close to 45 minutes to get into town.
‘This happens every single time there is a closure or work done to Wolborough Street’, they told the Mid-Devon Advertiser.
A Devon County Council spokesperson confirmed the Wolborough Street closure is due to end on November 6, with temporary traffic lights remaining until November 25.
They said the closure was necessary to install essential electrical infrastructure and that some road users, namely HGVs, had been using local roads, including Coach Road, which are not part of the official diversion.
The width restriction on Coach Road will cease when the Wolborough Street closure is lifted, the council has confirmed.
