Cllr Mike Walters, of Kingsteignton, writes: I was interested to note the points made by one of the most vociferous members of the public in Kingsteignton. Aggravation of the situation is accelerated by calls for all the local representatives of the councils to resign en masse. Where would that lead us? Currently Newton Abbot is facing the prospects of development, but in a regulated and controlled way (as much as we are able). The knowledge of the process and the system is generally understood and, rather than blind the public with science, a process that is hard to fully comprehend, it is wise to keep abreast of the process, until the chips are down. I am certainly working towards the best possible solution for the people of Kingsteignton, in any decisions that we are able to make and that which is under our control. As has already been stated in the current process, it is the inspectors, the government and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister who will make the final decision over the options for development in our area. We as local representatives will have our say and persuade the powers that be of our wishes. When it comes down to planning, that is where we can exert our opinions, based on the interests of the people we represent. There is absolutely no way that I would climb down from wanting the very best possible solution to any form of development that is our responsibility to see through to its conclusion. So to the critics, by all means express your points of view, it is your right, but please let others and me know how you are thinking and your constructive criticisms can be taken on board. Outright condemnation helps no one and only serves to cloud the issues. We have to accept that some development will take place, how much and where is the debate, not one of unhelpful disjointed and uninformed criticism. Let common sense prevail and a levelheaded approach will give better results than wild accusations.
