COUNCILLORS turned into scrubbers for the big clean up in Teignmouth last Thursday. Teignbridge and town councillors left the council chamber chat and put some elbow grease to help their community. But it has to be more than a one-off PR exercise, warned Cllr Sylvia Russell at Teignmouth's Finance and General Purpose meeting. 'We do pay for a cleaning service, after all, and it should be kept up because it is what we pay for,' she said. The council's Cleaner, Greener, Safer campaign was supported by leaders of the district council, its chief executive, council colleagues and members of Teignbridge Community Initiatives department, community safety wardens, enforcement officers, the Blitz Team, resorts staff, and representatives of the fire service and the police. The probation service also provided a team of those on community service, there were some young offenders with the youth offending team. Cllr Fred Tooley praised the efforts of the community service team who removed weeds and scrubbed the fountain in the Triangle. But 'there are still many more roads in Teignmouth that could do with the same treatment, he said. The new Teignmouth Fire Station was used as a base for the clean-up operation.
