A COURIER has admitted transporting almost half a kilogram of cocaine to Devon after being arrested in Newton Abbot.
James Matthews, aged 57, of Irwell Close, Sefton, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to possession of 496 grams of cocaine with intent to supply at Exeter Crown Court.
The hearing had been adjourned two months ago because of a strike by criminal defence barristers which had prevented him being given legal advice or being represented.
Judge Anna Richardson adjourned his sentence until November 30 and ordered the probation service to prepare a pre-sentence report.
Mr Ryan Murray, prosecuting, said Matthews had entered a basis of plea which will be reviewed before a decision is made on whether it is accepted.
The case arises from police stopping and searching a car in Newton Abbot earlier this year and finding a large package of drugs n the engine compartment.
Miss Evie Dean, defending, said Matthews is on conditional bail and has surrendered his passport.
