A SECOND black swan cygnet is missing in Dawlish, it has been confirmed.

Days after one cygnet was lost, the town’s waterfowl wardens have announced one of the two cygnets hatched to parents Rosie and Bluey is also missing.

A spokesman for the wardens said there was ‘another sad update from our swan family’.

‘We’re very saddened to share that it appears one of Rosie and Bluey's cygnets has now gone missing.

‘The wardens are continuing to keep a close watch and are looking to see if the cygnet is still around, but sadly there has been no sign of it so far.

‘While we always hope for the best, we know this news will be upsetting for the many residents and visitors who have been following the progress of our swan families.’

The good news is that Hope, the sole surviving swan from Rosie and Bluey’s previous brood, remains with the younger cygnet and is continuing to do well.

Rosie and Bluey are also still caring for their family and keeping a watchful eye over their youngsters as they grow and explore their surroundings.

The waterfowl wardens spokesman added: ‘It is always difficult when things like this happen, particularly after watching these beautiful birds hatch and begin their journey on the water.

‘Sadly, nature can be unpredictable, and although losses are never easy to accept, they are a reality of life in the wild.

‘A heartfelt thank you to our wardens and to everyone who continues to look out for and care about our much-loved Dawlish waterfowl.

‘We know how much these families mean to our community, and we will continue to share updates as they become available.

‘Let’s keep Rosie, Bluey, Hope and his cygnet and all our swan families in our thoughts as they continue to grow and thrive.’

Last weekend, one of the five cygnets of the more established black swan couple Bert and Kimba was also lost.

Despite searches by the wardens and members of the public, there was no sign of the young cygnet.
