CAVANNA Homes has won approval to build on a greenfield site at Kingskerswell, prompting accusations that Devon Highways cut a deal with the developers.

Up to 62 homes will be built on the bowl-shaped field near Charles Road, within an Area of Great Landscape Value and allocated Open Land between Settlements.

The company has agreed to pay contributions of some £6,700 per dwelling to go towards education, playing fields, play space and indoor leisure enhancements. But it was the £240,000 highway contribution that proved contentious at Teignbridge Council's planning committed on Monday.

Ward member Cllr Anthony Ballinger said that at the site meeting, the highway engineer objected.

'Now we see over a quarter of a million pound contribution to the South Devon Link Road and they no longer object. I think it stinks.'
