WEEKS of worry ended yesterday as hundreds of GCSE pupils across Teignbridge learned how they fared in their exams.

Youngsters at Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot, acquitted themselves commendably with 71 per cent achieving five or more GCSEs at grade C or higher.

A 62 per cent success rate was achieved in English while the statistic for maths was 60 per cent.

In line with national predictions, the academy's results went down overall despite students and teachers 'working harder than ever'.

Executive head Matthew Shanks said: 'Once again students and staff should be proud of their efforts.'

He added: 'The change to the exam systems currently taking place makes taking examinations even more difficult than ever. Young people should celebrate these achievements.'<
