A dilapidated 'eyesore' on the gateway into Shaldon could make way for 14 homes. Tiverton-based Devonshire Homes is working with architect firm Harrison Sutton on plans for the prestige landmark development on the former Sleeman and Hawken site in Bridge Road. The homes, with parking provision for 20 cars, adjoins the colourful Shoreside development on the former Teignahve site, with prime views of the estuary. It is designed in keeping with the existing buildings, original plans for which attracted major controversy. Architect Chris Cunningham, who is also responsible for plans for the Teignmouth Museum re-vamp, said that the design followed the 'philosophy of the adjoining estate. 'It is seen very much as the continuation of the adjoining development with completion of the Bridge Road enhancement initiated in the previous scheme. It is transforming what is presently a dilapidated and unsightly eyesore into a prestige landmark development for the village.' Two vacant homes, a workshop and a derelict public house currently occupy the site. Highways issues and flood defence have been taken into consideration in detailed discussions with Teignbridge planners. The developer will contribute to an off-site flood protection scheme. Shaldon is classed as a rural settlement in core strategy plans by Teignbridge Council. If implemented, it will restrict future development in the pretty fishing village.
