Work on long-awaited flood defences for Teigngrace could start within months and bring much-needed relief for residents.

The Environment Agency has awarded Teignbridge Council a £150,000 grant after deciding the project, designed by Teignbridge, was technically viable.

The low-lying hamlet has suffered for many years as Ventiford Brook tends to break its banks after heavy rain.

Homes have been inundated and roadside depth poles warn drivers that passing through the flooded areas can be risky or impossible.

Cllr Kevin Lake, district environment spokesman, said: 'We have worked closely with residents, the parish council and local member Cllr Joan Lambert to bring this flood management project, which has been a key priority for the area, to fruition.

'I am delighted that the scheme designed by Teignbridge Council has succeeded in gaining approval and funding from the Environment Agency where others have failed, demonstrating real benefits to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in line with the impact on the environment.

'Over the coming weeks the final design for the scheme will be produced and necessary approvals sought, while we consult with all stakeholders including local residents, Natural England, Network Rail, the Environment Agency, Sibelco and the Stover Canal Society to ensure the scheme delivers the highest level of flood protection for the village and does not compromise the aspirations for canal regeneration.'

Cllr Lambert said: 'This work is long overdue. any thing that will reduce the flooding on this site is welcomed, to bring peace of mind to the residents.'
