The second concert of the season for Nadsa takes place at Newton Abbot’s Courtenay Centre on October 25 with a welcome return for pianist Daniele Rinaldo.
He previously wowed the audience in the way he ‘breathed life into his repertoire’ back in 2022 and this month’s concert promises to one of contrasts: lyricism, suspended silences, raw passion, exhilaration.
Daniele is something of a polymath: an Italian, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Musik-Akademie in Basel, where he gained the Soloist Diploma.
He has performed as a soloist in major venues and festivals around the world, from the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican to concert halls across Europe and the United States. A pivotal figure in his artistic development through the last years has been Maria João Pires, who mentors him still today and with whom he frequently shares the concert stage.
Daniele’s programme is not a chronological sequence. His concert opens with a work composed in 1976: the quiet and calm, almost transcendent Für Alina by Arvo Pärt. Next, he’s chosen Maurice Ravel Miroirs (1904–05) and then Frédéric Chopin Barcarolle in F sharp major, Op. 60 (1845-46).
These three compositions were all ground-breaking works. Pärt had experienced a prolonged creative crisis, Ravel was part of a group considered to be artistic outcasts and Chopin’s Barcarolle was quite unlike any other piano music of its time.
A contemporary piece follows the interval: Peter Nickol Blue Mix (2002) folowed byt the monumental work, Franz Schubert Sonata in A major, D 959. It is one of the four visionary masterpieces Schubert finished in 1828 which were to be among the very last things he wrote.
Tickets for the 3.30pm concert must be bought in advanceonline at www.nadsa.co.uk, or at 01626 717730 between 10am and 5pm.
