The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Teign area and low South Devon estuaries as continued rain exacerbates high river levels.
Two amber alerts have been issued in Teignbridge with the Environment Agency warning residents to ‘be prepared’ as flooding is possible.
Flooding is possible in the River Teign area from today (Thursday January 22) into the weekend.
‘Catchments are saturated and river levels will remain high,’ an Environment Agency spokesperson said. ‘Forecast levels may cause flooding to low lying land and roads close to the rivers, although no flooding to properties is currently forecast,’ the spokesperson added.
The main areas of concern are Newton Abbot, Kingsteignton, Teignmouth, Shaldon, Bovey Tracey, Kingskerswell, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren.
Along the coast, high tides on Friday morning (January 23) also pose a risk, particularly in the Teign estuary.
The Environment Agency said it continues to monitor the situation closely and advised people to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
Earlier today, the Met Office forecast more rain and heavy winds as Storm Ingrid approaches with periods of heavy rain and strong winds that are likely to cause flooding and disruption to travel on Friday (January 23) and Saturday (January 24).
