This year's Ashburton in Bloom Summer Competition has withered on the vine after insufficient helpers could be found to guarantee the operation's success. Although the town will still be decked out with hanging baskets, public floral displays and attractive private gardens, no one will be formally recognised for their efforts. The town council's annual flower competition for residents living in social housing, for which entries were invited earlier this month, is unaffected by the cancellation. This is the first time the Ashburton in Bloom committee has had to call off the competition in its 10- year history and the organisers have called for new blood to come forward. Secretary Irene Golding said that just a few new faces would make all the difference. 'We're only talking about three or four people, particularly those with cars, who could help drive the judges around the town,' she told this paper. 'There is also a lot of paperwork involved, so help with that would be good, too.' Mrs Golding said her poor health this year had contributed to the difficulties, but that she looked forward to better times ahead and the resumption of the competition next year. More information on how to get involved can be obtained from Ashburton Town Hall. Current cup and trophy holders should hand in their awards at the town's tourist information centre by the end of July.
