A TOP retail fashion chain is moving into the former Woolworths store in Teignmouth, giving a big boost to the shopping centre, writes John Ware.

M & Co is refitting the large Bank Street premises empty for some months since CarpetRight quit.

The company has about 300 outlets nationwide, and sells clothing for women, men, teenagers and children, along with soft furnishings.

It has a reputation for up market, quality fashions, and traders and councillors have welcomed the arrival, which will also create new jobs.

The refurbishment of the store has been delayed after an old culvert was uncovered at the Brunswick Street side of the building, but is expected to be completed in time for an autumn opening.

Paul Robinson, chairman of Teignmouth Traders' Association, described it as good news for the town.

'This building in a prime spot has been empty for too long, and was becoming something of a blight on the shopping area.

'It is a vote of confidence in Teignmouth that a national chain wants to invest in the town, and will hopefully draw people in from other areas.

'Their arrival is just the boost that we need in these very difficult economic times.'

M & Co has just started advertising for staff, and is one of the largest independently owned fashion retailers in the UK. The company was founded in 1834 and the nearest branches are in Exmouth and Tiverton.
