Salmon and trout in the River Teign are facing a difficult future because of the environmental drought announced this week.
Only one sea trout has been landed by anglers since February in its lower reaches because of worryingly low water levels preventing fish from leaving the estuary for up-river spawning grounds.
And the situation has been described as 'disastrous' by a fishing club which owns rights on the river.
River flows are low and wetlands are drying out after two successive dry winters and 16 of the last 25 months having below-average rainfall.
This week's downpours are unlikely to have had any material affect.
