Andrew Luxton MRICS FARLA partner in charge of Stags Residential Lettings Department confirms that after many years of campaigning for regulation in the lettings industry a speech by Sajid Javid MP, Community Secretary at the Conservative Party Conference, included plans to introduce mandatory regulation for letting agents in England.

This will represent the single greatest step forward in a generation for consumer protection within the private rented sector and offers to do more to clean up the image of the industry than the hundreds of smaller laws and pieces of legislation passed over the last two decades.

The speech also included an announcement that landlords will be required to belong to a redress scheme and ultimately these proposals will provide a fairer and more professional private rented sector.

Andrew Luxton confirms that as a firm Stags is a bonded member of ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents) and the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), and holds all deposits within the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.

‘Rogue agents and rogue landlords give the industry a bad name and we are delighted as a firm that these proposals have been announced, and whilst the devil will be in the detail the broad principle is to be welcomed by all.’
