PROPOSALS to turn a former seafront hotel in Teignmouth into an aparthotel have been submitted to planners.

The proposal - reference 26/00241/FUL - is seeking to convert the former Grade II listed Bay Hotel into a ‘professionally managed’ aparthotel, providing ‘modern serviced visitor accommodation within the existing historic structure’.

An aparthotel, or apartment hotel, blends the independence of a private apartment with the services and amenities of a traditional hotel.

The proposed accommodation at 15 Powderham Terrace will consist of self-contained units designed for tourists, business travellers and visitors seeking flexible, serviced accommodation, the planning statement for 26/00241/FUL says.

Guest stays are expected to range from one night to several weeks, operating as short-term accommodation rather than permanent residential use, the statement adds.

Operated by a professional management company, bookings, guest communication and operational management will be coordinated through a centralised, off-site management system.

Teignbridge Council are due to make a decision by August 10.

The design and access statement for 26/00241/FUL says: ‘The proposed scheme is sympathetic, minimal, and carefully considered.

‘Layout have been optimised to accommodate aparthotel use, while external changes improve visual uniformity and symmetry, retaining key architectural features.

‘The building’s historic character, integrity, and contribution to the Conservation Area are preserved and enhanced.

‘This development revitalizes a building currently in decline, ensuring it continues to provide high-quality accommodation while maintaining its historical presence in Teignmouth’.
