DENBURY Athletic beat Babbacombe Corries 3-1 to lift the Les Bishop Cup at Newton Spurs' Recreation Ground on Monday night.

It was Athletic's second consecutive South Devon League divisional cup success, having beaten Watcombe Wanderers in last year's Bill Treeby final prior to their promotion from Division Five.

But Athletic, who are also challenging for the Division Four title and have the Herald Cup final to look forward to on May 14, had goalkeeper Toby Creber to thank to prevent them falling behind during the opening 60 seconds of the Division Four showpiece.

Creber dived to his left to turn away a goal-bound shot, and his team went on to take control.

Denbury took the lead in the 18th minute when Matt Guy hammered home a penalty, awarded for handball, and Babbacombe were forced onto the back foot as the Newton Abbot side continued to pour forward.

With two of the better chances, Guy went close with a free-kick while team-mate Graham Mabin's header flew just over the crossbar.

Corries managed to ride the storm and created two decent openings of their own.

Just after the half-hour mark Creber produced another fine save, this time pushing away Darren Whittington's fierce drive, before Hedley Crossman-Emms was denied an equaliser by James Currell's headed clearance off the goal-line.

Four minutes into the second half Denbury were given some breathing space when Jamie Felton's diving header squeezed inside the upright past the stranded keeper.

And just six minutes later, Denbury skipper Pete Heywood added a third, chasing down a loose ball to finish from 16 yards.

Corries refused to lie down, though, with Luke Bowser and Whittington going close before Crossman-Emms chipped the ball over Creber to set up a frantic last ten minutes.

But an unlikely comeback wasn't forthcoming and Athletic saw out the remaining time safely, to the applause of around 150 spectators.MORE SPORTS STORIES ON OUR ONLINE EDITION
