RIDLEY, the retired guide dog from Dawlish, has been honoured with a national award at the Guide Dogs People Awards 2025.
The 11-year-old black Labrador cross golden retriever scooped the Hero Dog Award in recognition of his life of service, not only as a guide dog but his continued contribution as an ambassador dog, therapy dog, and loyal companion.
Ridley was nominated for the award by Peter Boston, his owner, and the two attended an afternoon tea celebration at the Guide Dogs National Centre near Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, together with the other 2025 winners.
Peter and his wife Marylou rehomed Ridley after he retired as a guide dog.
Peter said: ‘Ridley is an extraordinary dog whose life has been defined by loyalty, service and kindness.
‘He’s one in a million and I’m so proud of him.
‘Ridley worked faithfully for eight years, giving his guide dog owner independence, safety and confidence.
‘He’s also been a lifeline for me personally - providing constant comfort and strength as I overcame major heart surgery and a serious illness.
'Since retirement, Ridley hasn’t slowed down.
'He’s stepped into new roles where his gentle nature continues to touch lives.'
As an ambassador dog, Ridley has attended fundraising collections, school talks and community events, totally 54 this year alone, raising awareness of Guide Dogs’ life-changing work, and vital funds.
Ridley also thrives as a therapy dog, visiting nursing homes, hospices, and schools to bring companionship and peace to those in need.
Peter added: ‘Ridley’s calm presence often leaves a deep impression, and even those once afraid of dogs have found comfort sitting beside him.’
Peter, who is also a volunteer fundraising coordinator and speaker for Torbay and District Guide Dogs, was presented with Ridley’s award by Andrew Lennox, Chief Executive Officer for Guide Dogs.
Andrew said: ‘Congratulations to Ridley, and of course Peter for all the amazing work that they do together in their local community.
‘From what I’ve heard, Ridley has become somewhat of a celebrity in Dawlish and is often recognised when he’s out and about with Peter - a true sign of the impact he’s made.
'Ridley’s life of service as a guide dog and beyond is incredible.
‘His ongoing dedication makes him truly deserving of this award.’
As well as Ridley, Peter and Marylou have rehomed retired guide dog Clara, who also lives with them.
The Guide Dogs People Awards are held annually to recognise the stand-out efforts and expertise of the charity’s volunteers, service users and staff.
Winners are selected by an expert panel of judges, based on public nominations made earlier in the year.
Founded in 1934, Guide Dogs helps two millions people in the UK living with sight loss live the life they choose.
The charity’s expert staff, volunteers and life-changing dogs help people affected by sight loss live actively, independently and well.
