ONLY one death relating to coronavirus was recorded in the most recent weekly figures for Devon and Cornwall – the lowest total for eight months.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which relate to the week of May 8 to May 14 but registered up to May 22, show that just one of the 273 deaths registered in the Devon and Cornwall had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
It is the fourth week in a row where there were no deaths in a care home, and the ninth consecutive week where the total number was in single figures.
The figures for week 19 (May 8-14) show that the only death relating to Covid-19 was of someone from Mid Devon in a hospital.
The one death is the lowest weekly total for 33 weeks, when there were no deaths in the two counties in the week of September 19-25 – the last week without a Covid-19 related death.
No deaths so far been registered in the Isles of Scilly, and there were no deaths in the most recent week in East Devon, South Hams and Teignbridge, Cornwall, West Devon, Torbay (for the 3rd week running), Exeter and Mid Devon (for the 6th week running), in Torridge and Plymouth (for the 7th week running), and North Devon (for the 14th week running) were registered.
In total, 1,745 deaths from coronavirus have been registered across Devon and Cornwall, with 959 in hospitals, 658 in care homes, 116 at home, five in a hospice, three in a communal establishment and four ‘elsewhere’.
Of the deaths, 130 have been registered in Teignbridge. So far in 2021, there have been 70 deaths in Teignbridge.
