CIVIC leaders in Ashburton are cock-a-hoop after winning a seven-year battle for a new housing development at Dolbeare.

The contentious development for 14 properties will include seven much-needed affordable homes on the edge-of-town site off Pitley Lane.

Former mayors Cllrs Elaine Baker and Donald Distin and current first citizen Cllr John Nutley said as one: 'This is great news for Ashburton. It will be a huge benefit to the town.'

Their delight came on Tuesday when it was revealed that farmer Michael Waycott's application had finally been accepted on appeal by a planning inspector.
