A NEW Co-op store in Ipplepen could make everyday shopping more convenient for villagers and passing motorists, according to residents who have voiced their support for the plans.
Public comments backing the proposal have been submitted to Teignbridge Council, which is considering an application to redevelop the former Parkfield service station off Totnes Road.
Kelly Sykes said the store would be a positive addition to the community, providing a convenient service for residents, while supporting a local business. She said developments which improve local amenities and create opportunities should be encouraged.
Michael West also supported the plans, suggesting the new shop could help reduce traffic congestion in Newton Abbot, where roadworks continue to cause difficulties for drivers.
Bethany Mitchell described the proposal as a ‘valuable addition to the village’, saying it would provide a convenient place for residents and passing motorists alike to buy everyday essentials.
She said the site’s position on Totnes Road made it a sensible location, with easy access for drivers.
Miss Mitchell added that the development could support employment, boost the local economy and reduce the need for residents to travel to larger supermarkets.
Stephen Powley, who regularly drives along the A381, said the proposed store would be a welcome facility, pointing out there were few shops between Newton Abbot and Totnes.
Ipplepen Parish Council has raised no objection in principle to the development, although it warned that the proposed public footway could be unsafe for the expected level of pedestrian traffic.
It also said it would welcome a reduction in the existing 40mph speed limit on the A381.
The plans involve demolishing the former sales office and canopy and replacing them with a new store, allowing the existing Co-op on Fore Street to relocate.
The garage to the rear of the site would remain unaffected by the proposal.
The proposed store would have 12 parking spaces, including one accessible space, and cycle parking for eight bicycles.
Teignbridge Council is expected to decide on the application, reference 26/01433/FUL, by November 16.
