Dumped in Lower Drive just before Christmas last year, a resident saw the tan and white dog being pushed from the door of a car before being driven off. She took the animal into her care and contacted the RSPCA.
Named Willy by the staff, the bulldog soon became a favourite at the RSPCA and even received his own Christmas presents and cards from members of the public when an appeal for information was put out last December.
His original owner was prosecuted for abandonment this year and banned from keeping animals for five years.
Willy is now happily settled with his new owners in Liverton and is receiving love and attention .
His owner, Alison Upton, said: 'We have six cats and three other dogs and Willy is fitting in nicely.
'When he arrived he was very nervous and extremely quiet but has settled in really well. He rules the roost now and is a completely different character from when he first arrived.
'He is now very protective of the house and us, and does not like loud noises, but when he gets to know you, he is fine, happy and gets quite attached to you. He likes a lot of fuss and attention and oves his food. I'm glad we can provide a loving and caring home for him.'
Jackie Ballard, RSPCA director general, said: 'Our message is simple. don't throw your old pet out, don't dump your new pet and if you are thinking of purchasing an animal make sure the recipients really want one and have the time, money and facilities.'
