Jean Burgess, deputy manager of Barnardo's in Bank Street, Newton Abbot, for 17 years, retired this week – on her 60th birthday. 'Jean will always be remembered for the help, support and friendship she has given,' said shop manager Wendy Trewin. Barnardo's staff collected the signatures of well-wishing customers and volunteers who wanted to support Mrs Burgess – they covered four large posters. Mrs Burgess and her husband Gary have eight grandchildren, another is due any day. She enjoys needlework, gardening and travelling, but the interest closest to her heart is another charity she supports, the Children's Hospice South West. Anyone wishing to give Mrs Burgess a retirement gift has been asked to make a donation to the hospice. However, she has been pleased to accept a weather vane as a birthday present from her friends and colleagues. 'We will miss Jean in our working lives, and wish her every happiness in the future,' said Mrs Trewin. 'I have had 17 very happy years at Barnardo's,' said Mrs Burgess. 'I shall miss everyone here very much. I'd just like to thank everyone for the wonderful presents and cards.'

wished well: Jean Burgess, deputy manager, with her friends and colleagues at Barnardo’s in Newton Abbot. Tuesday was her 60th birthday and the day on which she retired from work.
