A LATE goal shattered Buckland Athletic's FA Cup dream on Wednesday evening.

Poole side Hamworthy United scored in the 88th minute – to defeat the Newton Abbot side 3-2 in the replay of Saturday's first round preliminary game.

'We're very disappointed,' said club spokesman Ian Miller. 'Over the two games we felt that we deserved to win.'

Buckland Athletic started brightly and took the game to the home side. About 15 minutes in John Rimmer was chopped down in the box and the referee awarded a penalty.

Rimmer himself stepped up, and, although his penalty was saved, he converted the rebound to put the visitors ahead.

The Newton Abbot side looked comfortable for the remainder of the first period and went in at half-time one goal to the good.

Hamworthy though came strongly out of the blocks in the second half – scoring after just two minutes. Five minutes later the home side struck again to take the lead.

A rattled Athletic managed to play their way back into the game – aided by Hamworthy's striker Carl Mutch receiving his second yellow card. Mutch was also sent off in the first game at Homers Heath on Saturday.

Striving for an equaliser against ten men the visitors got a the breakthrough five minutes from time through a strike by hard-working midfielder Marc Revell.

Barely having time to celebrate the leveller Bucks lost the ball in midfield and Hamworthy pounced on the break to sink the Newton Abbot side.

Mr Miller said: 'The boys played brilliantly. It was their first FA Cup and I think they'll learn from the experience and come back stronger next year.'
